Cannot install Extensions on macOS 10.15 (read-only Macintosh HD)

• Oct 31, 2019 - 22:03

Each time a try to install either extension, "General HQ" and "Drumline," I receive a failed notice saying that it can't be installed on a read-only volume. I'm assuming this is a problem with the way macOS Catalina (10.15 —now 10.15.1) has updated permissions and has limited access to the system volume. Both extensions install fine on a machine that is still running 10.14, however, I don't want to roll back my current machine in order to do this.

I've given MuseScore full disk access by modifying the System Preferences > Privacy settings as directed in several other forum topics, but it has not solved the problem.

I'm wondering where MuseScore is attempting to install the files, AND if it's possible to change where those files are being installed OR if I can change the permission of the volume that it's trying to install to.

Is it trying to install in the Root or someplace similar? You can't do that in Catalina. Other apps doing that have had problems. I had to move the repository of the Hauptwerk virtual organ system from the Root to /User/Shared (as an admin) and mess around with groups and owners as root himself. Fortunately, it depended on a config file that I could modify (with admin access). Catalina is a different world. Who's responsible for the extension?

Read-Only volumes for the system are a major feature of Catalina.

Unknown. I assume MuseScore is responsible for both extensions.

I do know about Catalina's new walled garden approach with the hidden read-only Macintosh HD volume: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210650

Currently, I've changed my preferences in MuseScore so that the Extensions and SoundFonts folders are in /Users/Shared/MuseScore Extensions and /Users/Shared/SoundFonts

I've also changed the owner to root (and admin) for each of these folders, but to no avail.

I'd only be guessing, but perhaps MuseScore is trying to download the extensions to a /tmp folder somewhere on the Macintosh HD before installing to the final Extensions folder? If so, I don't know how to change that setting or if that's even a valid explanation.

If you open the Edit->Preferences window, under the general tab MuseScore answers your question of where it is trying to install both Extensions and sound fonts. The paths are labelled Extensions and SoundFonts.

This is also happening to me, I've had this headache for 2 days. I believe until there is a fix, I am going to have to revert my macbookpro (mid2015 2.5 GHz i7 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3) back to 10.14. Very frustrating
