Is it possible to download the software to a separate hard drive - I don't see where to choose that option.
Thanks.

You can download to wherever you want, right-click that "direct link", save link as.
But why? You can also just, after the download, move the downloaded file whereever you want.

Ok - From the downloads list on my laptop, I clicked and dragged this .exe file to my external hard drive but when I open it there, the message says it's opening it "on my computer hard drive1" which I assume which I assume is the laptop and not my external hard drive - This may not be the case but ?.....

There is no .exe file that gets downloaded, but a .msi file, the installer package.
And whether a harddrive is internal or external means (next to) nothing to Windows (as long as both are connected and powered on).
Not sure at all what you are trying to achieve (nor why), do you want to install MuseScore on your external disk, or just store the installer there?

I want to install Musescore on the external disk.

The shortcuts to start the program will be made by Windows using the current letter assigned to the external disk.
So you need to be aware that it will work in the future only if you take care to reassign exactly the same letter to the external disk when you attach it.

Then run tgat msi file and in the installer dialog tell it where to install to rather than taking the default.
After installation you can't (successfully) move the installed version anymore
