MuseScore 3.3.4 crashes on startup on Mojave

• Dec 8, 2019 - 07:11

I just updated to MacOs Mojave 10.14.6 and to MuseScore 3.3.4. I managed to run MuseScore a couple of times but now I have to force quit on startup. I use Motu 828mk2 firewire soundcard and I noticed that MuseScore 3 couldn't use it. Instead it used my Mac Mini's internal speaker. Now MuseScore freezes and crashes every time on startup, even if I fully inactivate Motu. I've had this hardware combination for years and with MacOs 10.8.5 + MuseSscore 2 everything worked nicely.

Thank you! By reverting to factory settings, I was able to launch MuseScore 3 once without any problems. But after closing and opening again, it freezes. But now I also noticed that after 1,5 minute of "no response" it suddenly opens normally AND I can use my Motu as a sound device. So now it seems to work but startup takes about 1,5 minute. Surely this can't be right..?

Now I noticed that if I reset to default settings, MuseScore 3 starts "normally" (it takes only seconds, not minutes). If I leave the default folders blanc in the musescore settings -> general tab, then it takes about 2minutes to start. The reason I left these areas blanc was because I didn't want Musescore to create folders to my Documents folder. No I've changed the default folder location to Applications and everything seems to work fine.

MuseScore will try to create the folders it uses no matter what, so I can't even imagine what it might be trying to do if you don't give sensible locations in preferences. But is Applications really a good place for MuseScore to be creating folders that you are supposed to be able to write to? I'd have thought that would be a protected folder.
