Houdini

• Dec 11, 2019 - 18:32

So I tied up myself like Houdini, but I can't escape.
I was trying to import a MuseScore 1 score into MuseScore 3
and I kept failing.
I remember clicking "yes" to "reset all elements" whatever that means.
So now when I open MuseScore 3 and click on "open" am not
seeing any of my recent(2019) scores.
Instead, I am seeing old scores perhaps from MuseScore 1.
How do I rectify this?

If the score is on your computer, you can open it like you'd open any other file in any other program: use File / Open, navigate to the folder you saved the file to. It's up to you to know what folder to look in, though - there is no way we can know what folder you chose to save your score into.

People tell me that I'd never learn to use the computer well if I do not experiment.
But it turns me off real bad when I experiment and find myself in a situation like this.
I am not in a group. I am operating solo.
When I begin a new score in MuseScore, I click on "save as."
Thereafter I click on "save" until I finish the score.
When I want to open that score I double- click on the MuseScore icon on my desktop, click on 'file" and then "open."
A window would open in which I would see the name of the score.
I'd click on it and then click on "open" and it opens up.
So I know how to find the score but I do not know what folder the file was saved to.

After the failed experiment I am trying to see my 2019 scores. They are not showing up.
But scores dated 2015 & 16 are showing up.

It's when you first saved the score - when you first saved it - that MuseScore would have prompted you for a folder to save to. And unfortunately, that's the part we just have no way of knowing - what folder you saved to. Depending on what version of MuseScore you were using, and what folder you had saved to most recently, the default folder offered to you could have been anything, You should always be careful - not just in MuseScore, but in any computer program - to see what folder you are saving to. Folders are provided by your OS to help you organize things, but they don't work well if you aren't paying attention to what folder you place things into. So, that's your lesson for going forward.

Meanwhile, to deal with the current situation - while there is no way to go back in time to remember what folder you saved those scores to, it certainly is possible to learn to use the facilities provided by your OS to help you find files. For instance, in Windows, you can use Explorer to browse to the top level folder for your drive and type "*.mscz" into the search box. It will find all files ending with those letter. I assume macOS has something similar. Here is you need further help probably any number of articles on the web exist to help with the process, or if you have any friends or family who are more computer-savvy, maybe one of them could help you.

So I've been working hard....exploring.
When MuseScore opens up I click on "file" and then on "save a copy."
A window opens up and bingo ...they are all there smiling at me. Ho,Ho,Ho.
If I click on a title it drops down into a box at the bottom of that window, where I can click on save.
I do not want to experiment again and spoil things.
So how do I open them from there?

In reply to by cedy

Right in that dialog it tells you what folder it is, just remember it for next time you go to open a file with File / Open. Or, if it's not a folder you'd like to use any more, move them to another folder that you'd like to use instead (files can be moved using Explorer/Finder/whatever program you use to look at other files on your computer). Alnd make sure to select that folder next time you save from MuseScore.

That screenshot isn’t what you’d see if you’ve already started MuseScore and use File / Open - that’s what you might see when you first started MuseScore. Try answering “no”, then after MuseScore starts up, use File / Open as I suggested.

Well, that must be what you saved under that name in that folder. Intake it you probably had another song by that name you were expecting instead? Probably you saved it somewhere else, unless you actually saved it here but then accidentally saved some other file on top of it.

My advice is to see if there are any classes on basic computer skills you could learn so you get more familiar with the basics of managing files and folders.

I don’t understand the question. “Score Properties” isn’t a place; you can’t delete scores from it because it doesn’t contain any scores. It’s just a dialog box that displays information about a score. Scores are stored on a drive on a your computer, so if you want to delete a score, that is where you delete it from. You can use the file browser that came with your computer - Explorer on Windows, Finder on macOS, etc - the delete files from your drive.

The computer sends the scores I do on Musescore to Musescore/scores.
Mac is not there.
If I open Musescore, click on File and then Open,I see all my 2019 files
in a box. Mac is not there.
When I try to open them Mac comes up.
I am not savvy enough to get rid of Mac.
Can someone who is savvy instruct me how to get rid of Mac?

In reply to by cedy

cedy, you know or have learned enough to figure this out. Please answer these questions.
1. Do all the scores in Documents/MuseScore/Scores open to show some version of "mac"? You've posted two screenshots of two different versions, one with notes and one with rests.
2. Are the PDF's of scores OK? Are they "mac" or are they correct scores?
3. One screenshot shows several scores loaded into MuseScore all at once. Do you always work this way?

You can work with all those scores loaded if you want, but it seems like a recipe for disaster to me. One of your screenshots tells me that MuseScore crashed. If you had all those scores loaded at the time of the crash, it's possible that at least some of those could now be ruined. So open and check the PDF against the MuseScore file of the same name (that opens as "mac").
Don't get rid of anything yet. Let's figure out what is going on first. If indeed there are corrupt files, it might be possible to reclaim them from the PDF's.
Something else might be going on with your computer. Does it work OK otherwise. Is it slower than usual, crash more often, or just not quite the same?

  1. Only PDF's, two JPG's and a draft I did recently are opening. They open correctly.
Mac does not show up with them. Mac shows up when I try to open scores via Musescore.
One with notes and one without?
I tried to delete the notes but Mac showed up as soon as I tried to open
one of my 2019 files in Musescore...... ..hence the two different shots.
  2. PDF's are O.K. Mac does not show up.
  3. That is how I work.
I start with a draft. When I am satisfied enough with the song/score, I do a PDF and store a copy outside of Musescore. But sometimes ideas come up later on and I go back to Musescore to make changes, especially lyrics.
I had tried and failed to put Musescore 1 scores into Musescore 3. I don't know if that had anything to do with what is going on.
My computer does not crash frequently.

No PDF or JPG files opens when using File / Open from within MuseScore. So you must be doing something else entirely to open those files, like maybe double-clicking them in Explorer, which opens them in a totally different program.

It's fine to make PDF's for sharing purposes, but if you want to open a score in MuseScore in order to edit it further, you cannot work from the PDF - you need to open the actual score (the MSCZ file).

MuseScore 1 files definitely can be opened in MuseScore 3, the same way as any other files: you go to File / Open, browse to the folder containing the file, select the file, hit Enter or click Open.

You haven't posted any scores at all, just pictures. If there is a score that doesn't open at all, we would need you to attach it - the score itself. But I'm guessing you really mean, it oipens, but doesn't contain what you thought it would. There is little we can do about that. Apparently you saved a score called "mac" mutliple times under different names, not sure why, but that is what MuseScore is showing you. And certianly the score is still there after uninstall/reinstall, that never deletes any of your scores. If you no longer wish to have that score on your computer, you need to delete it using Explorer, as I explained previously.

In reply to by cedy

That's because deleting MuseScore gets rid of the application but not all the associated folders. Like the folder in Documents where scores and other data are stored. Also data in hidden folders. So when you reinstalled, most things were like before you deleted. This is common in case you wanted to reinstall so that you wouldn't start completely over. Reinstall only works in the few cases when there is an actual problem with the UI (interface that you see when you open the program).

It's hard to help you when we don't know anything about your computer, or how you use it.

I am sorry if somehow an unintended "tone" was implied on my response. I was simply trying to be extremely clear and thorough in my explanation, because as you have acknowledged, you are not very experienced with computers.

Right at the top of that Score Properties dialog box it shows you the exact pathname of that score. If you want to delete the score, you need to go to your file browser (Explorer, on Windows) and navigate to that folder. Then you can click the file and press Delete to remove it.

Based on the pathname showing there (which starts, C:/Users/Admn/Documents...), my guess is that you miay have two different user accounts on your computer, one based on your name, and the other "Admn" (which I am taking to refer to "Administrator"). Each user account has its own Documents folder. And I'm guessing some of the scores you created while logged into one account, and others you created while logged into a different account. So the scores are scattered between two different folders. You can also use Explorer to move the files to the same folder.

For more information on using Explorer (sometimes called Windows Explorer, sometimes called File Explorer, depending on which version of Windows you are using), I would suggest doing a web search. There are many tutorials out there on basic computer management that would cover things like this.

Delete_mac_score.png

N.B. Your screenshot "Trouble Man" shows two scores with a tab named "Timid Lover".
Also, your 'Screenshot (13).png' shows those two files listed in the Windows browser.
You should check which is the "mac" by viewing both in MuseScore before you delete. One is "mac" the other could be a file you wish to keep.

I would like to give this thread a new name.
Can I do that?

No need. There is enough confusion as is... ;-)

You wrote:
But Mac is still appearing when I try to open other files.

Those other files, if not needed for their "mac" content, can be deleted too.

Most people name their score files (the mscz files) with the same name that shows in the score itself (i.e., in the title frame displayed at the top of the score). For example, if you notate a score with the title entered as "Happy Birthday", that would normally be how the MuseScore (mscz) file would be named.
Apparently, you have created multiple scores with the song title "mac" displayed in the MuseScore title frame, then saved those "mac" scores with different MuseScore file (mscz) names.

It would seem, then, that all your musescore files are corrupt. I suspect that happened when MuseScore crashed. Looks like you'll have recreate your score from the PDFs. In the future may I suggest loading, and working on, only one score at a time. I know it seems more expedient to load them all.
It may also be a problem using a computer that was setup for someone else, that still had some of their stuff on it. Best practice when transferring a computer is reinstall Windows. There is a procedure just for that kind of transfer.
