How to create multi measure rest for one part only in a multi part piece

• Mar 10, 2016 - 00:24

I am working on a piece, and I want the piano to be playing, but the voice has 4 measures of rest. How do I make it so that the voice part has a multi measure rest, but the piano doesn't? When I turn on multi measure rests, the 4 measures won't turn into a multi measure rest for some reason.

The point of a multimeasure rest is to save space and ink over a row of measure rests. I don't think they're ever used in one staff while another on the same system is not resting. So, MuseScore won't do that.

However, you've got me curious. What do you envision happening to barlines? Do you have some existing model for this that you would be willing to share a picture/mockup of?

Indeed, this is not how music is normnally notated. Multimeasure rests are used in individual parts, not in the score. So there would proetty much never be a time when you'd see multimeasure rests on one staff but not another at the same time. That's because there would be no point in it. Multimeasure rests normally serve two important purpose - they save space in the part (meaning potentially fewer pages required), and they make it much easier for the performer reading the part to count the rests. Neither of these applies to scores. Because other staves have notes, the multimeasure rest on one staff saves no space at all. And because musicians don't normally read from the full score, having the count in the score does the performer no good.

Perhaps you are actually wanting the voice part to disappear entirely when it is resting? If so, see Style / General / Hide empty staves.
