Continual Looped Playback?

• Apr 24, 2011 - 15:06

I sometimes use Musescore to help me when I'm working on a difficult piece or passage (I'm a classical guitarist). I key the piece or passage into Musescore then hit playback and try to play along with it. Being able to alter the tempo - so I can start off slowly and gradually increase speed on subsequent attempts - is very useful but what I really want to be able to do is have a section, or the whole piece, repeat endlessly (until I hit "Stop") so I can go over and over the most difficult parts without having to let go of my instrument to restart the playback.

The only ways I can see to achieve this are to set up a large number of repeats in the score or to export the file in an audio format and use my audio editor to loop it or. Neither of these is as flexible as I'd like so I'm wondering if there's an option somewhere that I've missed? Failing that maybe I should raise this as a feature request

You might also consider exporting to MIDI then loading the file into a sequencer, which would likely propvide better playback control.

But FWIW, the idea of looped playback seems like it would be quite straightforward to incorporate into MuseScore, at least from a UI perspective. Select a passage, hit Space, and it plays. Hit shift-Space to make it loop. That's how other programs I've used do it.

I am learning to play the Chromatic Button Accordion and use MuseScore to enter tunes I want to learn.

MuseScore is a brilliant program, however the lack of a loop playback feature does make it less convenient when using it to learn tunes by playing along with the playback.

I have a fairly old version of Band in a Box and I save my MuseScore files as Midi files and then open them in BIAB so that I can loop the playback. That works pretty well. It would be more straight forward if they could just be played back, in MuseScore with a loop option and a metronome count in.

This is definitely an opportunity for a future version of MuseScore.
