Chord Entry

• Aug 12, 2016 - 01:00

I'm writing a score that includes three different transposing instruments. I'm working in concert pitch.

I enter chords on the top part, obviously in concert pitch.

Those chords do not show up on the other parts, also in concert pitch.

When I prepare to export parts, I change the concert parts to transposed parts. The chords on the top part (the only ones on the score) correctly transpose.

No chords appear, transposed or otherwise on the other now-transposed parts on the score.

When I try to export the parts, sans chords, the "Export Parts" option is "greyed"--i.e., not a usable, available option.

So ... does one have to enter chords for every separate part, while in concert pitch mode, in order for chords to appear on those parts? In Finale, for instance, entering the chords once means the chords show up, transposed, when one "extracts" the parts.

Help appreciated, and thanks.

When you say "chords" I assuem you mean chord symbols like 'G7" etc. Those are indeed supposed to be incldued on every part you want them to be included on - that's the norm for published music. But no need to actually enter them individually - just copy and paste. Eg, right click one chord, Select / All Similar Elements, copy, then click the relevant place on the next staff, paste. Doesn't matter if you are in concert pitch mode or not when you do this; transposition works automatically.

Export Parts is something you do when viewing the *score*, not any one individual part. It is only available if parts have actually been generate (ie, File / Parts).
