first note too close

Hi, I would like to set the distance between each barline and the note immediately following it, to be a little larger than what MuseScore gives me by default. How do I do that? I need to know how to do it both retroactively, to modify an existing score, and proactively, to apply the roomier spacing to future scores from the start. Thanks, Ch.S.
