Import and Export Settings

• Feb 15, 2012 - 02:16

Often when we import or export something, we are prompted about such settings at that point (easier to deal with). However, a number of options (such as choosing whether to export with system and page breaks, or the shortest note when importing MIDI) are in preferences instead.

Perhaps there could be a 'Prompt For Action' option in Preferences.

What do others think about this?

Cases in point:

1. Putting the options for XML import/export only under Prefs and not in any dialog when importing the XML file.
2. Removing the "shortest note on import" for MID import. (I do believe this was put back later?)
3. Removing the "Set invisible" menu option and hiding it on another panel, requiring much more user interaction to find and use.

I don't agree with the UI design choice of not presenting important options (or even dialogs at times) when doing operations. Anything that the user can adjust should be presented during the operation. I find #3 the most important and distressing change. The removal of "set invisible" from the context menu impedes usefuless, simplicity of design and hampers productivity. I hope this choice is not the trend for the future of MS, and that it will be reversed.

Much of my work is on an HP TX2000 tablet with very limited screen space. I don't have MuseScore Connect enabled to optimize my score space. Now, to set anything invisible (which is a very common operation) has gone from a simple basically single-step right-click to a 4-step operation (F8, uncheck "visible" box, Apply, F8). This seems to be a very backwards move wrt UI design.

And whilst we're on the subject, something needs to be done about useability for those of us using MuseScore on laptops, netbooks and tablets without access to a mouse.

I have started using MuseScore actively in my instrumental teaching and really need to be able to scroll the screen without a mouse.

Currently the only way of doing this is by means of the Navigator pane and the trackpad - far too fiddly a process.

Can we have keyboard shortcuts for scrolling please.

I haven't used a build that doesn't have Set Invisible on the right click menu, but for me, even the right click menu is too cumbersome, as it requires one to leave and then re-enter note entry mode in addition to the two additional clicks to bring up the menu and then select set invisible. As I see it, that's already four clicks. I just want a keyboard shortcut to mark the most recently entered note/rest invisible. Then I wouldn't care if it was also in the right click menu or not.

But this doesn't seem to relate to the original subject of thread, really, which is specifically about settings that are applied on import and export and the question of whether they should be set globally only or also easily overridable on each import/export operation.

"As I see it, that's already four clicks."

Four clicks on one device, assuming the hand is already on said device and used to doing such things, isn't much but adding a shortcut as well would be the best, along with still being on the menu.

"But this doesn't seem to relate to the original subject of thread."

It all ties into reduced usability. I included #3 to keep it in the forefront as I think it is a very important negative change. We all use MS very differently, but hiding things on the score is a very frequently-used function and therefore should be kept very accessible.
