Bar numbers
I have just noticed that bar numbering includes the pickup bar as it's first bar.Most sheet music does not include this baran I change MuseSore to ignore the pickup bar.

Right click the pickup bar, click measure properties and check exclude from measure count.
BTW, this happens automatically by default if you specify the pickup in the first place, in the Create New Score wizard. But you do indeed need to do this manually if you add the pickup later.
