I own an M-Audio keyboard that maps midi through usb instead of requiring a midi cable. Use it with Nuendo and Reason and other software. Could you support this feature in MuseScore.
Your keyboard should work already with MuseScore. There is no need for a MIDI cable, MIDI over USB should work the same. Can you explain what is not working?
Followed your tutorial on midi keyboard detection in musescore.
Connected and powered up my keyboard before launching musescore.
Musescore launched and midi buttons engaged.
Created new blank score and put musescore into note mode (edit mode)
picked a note and clicked the note into the first measure.
Then attempted to play notes from the keyboard.
Nothing happened. No keys from the keyboard detected.
How does one confirm the keyboard is detected in Musescore?
OKAY I folowed your tutorial to the letter and my moto keyboard is connected. Was turned on before I launched MuseScore and the midi and speaker buttons where on. Selected measure, chose a note type and crochet and when I typed on my keyboard the D note nothing happens.
I'm using a motu keyboard connected via usb to my computer system.
My system works fine and my keyboard works with Reason and Nuendo without issue.
Please if there is a step I'm not aware of please let me know cause I really like your program and want to use it to compose my music.

Really like your software and want to use it to work on some compositions.
I see that this issue has been a problem for quite some time. Do you really support usb midi keyboards or just a small subset of them or not really any at all. Reason I ask is that I'm willing to help you out by testing on my computer and keyboard further in anyway to help you in resolving the issue.
If this issue really does work I would love to have the correct procedure to test it out and confirm.
It's possible this issue has been addressed in the next version due for release: 2.0
I do have it on good authority that there will be no more bug-fix releases for the 1.x version of MuseScore, which was a branch off the main development trunk.
This means that all efforts of testers, programmers etc can go into making sure the next released version has as many issues addressed in it as possible.
If it is not working in 2.0 (Nightly Build) then I'm sure the development team would value as much input as you have available in order to fix the problem, although, looking at the list of open issues, it may be some way down the list of priorities.
My M-Audio USB keyboard (Keystation 49e) works just fine with MuseScore 1.2, running on Windows Vista. So yes, USB keyboard *can* work if they are configured correctly.
As far as I know, it is not up to MuseScore to support each keyboard individually one by one - it is up to the device drivers that come with the keyboard to correctly integrate the keyboard with the OS and make its services available. Are you running the most recent Windows 7 drivers for your keyboard? Does the keyboard show up in in the MIDI Input section of Edit->Preferences->I/O in MuseScore?
BTW, while the keyboard works just fine, I never use it - note entry via computer keyboard is much more convenient and at least as fast. So I wouldn't let any problems you might be having getting MIDI input working dissuade you from using MuseScore.
I agree with Marc: MuseScore is very simple to use eeven without a keyboard. I mainly use my keyboard to enter chords for piano parts, but even that is still easy to do with just a computer keyboard. I also connect my keyboard via USB, and it works just fine.
Maybe this will help answer the USB Midi Keyboard problem. Note: I also plug musescore with a USBMidi Adapter then to my keyboard.
This is an exerpt from musescore's Local Handbook; page 13:
If you have multiple MIDI devices connected to your computer, you may need
to tell MuseScore which one is the MIDI keyboard. Go to Edit → Preferences...
(Mac: MuseScore → Preferences...). In the preferences dialog, click on the I/O
tab and select your device under the section labeled "Choose PortMidi input
device".

Just to double check: are you in note entry mode?
Yes. Just as the tutorial instructs you. Highlight a measure area or rest etc..
The tutorial explicitly tells you to be in note mode.
Is there some other mode that I'm suppose to be in?

Which version of MuseScore are you using?
The latest release. Version 1.2
I'm running windows 7 professional 64 bit.
Have you tried it on one of the Nightly builds?
It's possible this issue has been addressed in the next version due for release: 2.0

Marc,
Thanks you for you help. I updated the drivers and played around in the preferences and got it working. VERY VERY much appreciated.
Thanks Again,

Alright! This is what I call community support. Terrific!
