combine TAB'd notes into one voice - how?

• Jan 17, 2017 - 01:47

I have a one staff TAB song. No clef staffs. Unfortunately the notes are spread into 2 voices. I cant figure out how to combine them.

The handbook doesn't cover this situation, cause, there are no "note stems".

I tried to select all voice 2 notes, but cannot. I was then going to CTRL+ALT+1. I cannot even do this to one note at a time.

Comments

I would start off by going to instruments (press I as in Instrument) and add a linked staff. Set the staff to standard. When you press OK you will have notes on the linked staff. From there the handbook should make more sense.

Sorry, but Ive been trying for about 1 hour and I cannot get a std staff linked to my existing TAB staff.
1) I can get another TAB staff linked to existing one.
2) I can get new std staff linked to another new std staff.
3) cannot convert #1 dup into a std staff

Am I really dumb, or maybe this cant be done since I am working with a xml file exported from Tabledit?

Here's how:

1) Edit / Instruments
2) Click the existing staff in the list at right
3) Click "Add linked staff" button
4) In the dropdown list for the newly added staff, change form tab to standard
5) OK

Sounds like it's step 4 you are missing. it's how you convert any staff from tab to standard or vice versa.

What do you mean "no note stems"? What do note stems have to do with it? And what goes wrong when you try to select voice 2? How are you trying to do it? The usual method of selecting a range then excluding voice 1 via the Selection Filter, or right clicking one note then Select / More / Same voice, should work fine.

Anyhow, in general, two voices cannot be combined without loss unless they have the exact same rhythm. And most likely they don't have the same rhythm or multiple voices would not have been used in the first place. So even once you get the notes selected, that won't necessarily help. You'd need to go through the notes one at a time and shorten them where necessary to avoid any overlap and ensure they are compatible rhythmically.

Feel free to attach your actual score so we can give more detailed help.

1) stems seem to be required in order to mess with voices...according to my read of the Handbook.
2) my score is attached.

My goal is to have everything in one voice so that I can then fix the timing so that it is valid 4/4 in all measures.

This file came from a Tabledit 2 staff, (and I guess, 2 voice) TAB "saved as" xml. In MuseScore I have already deleted the so-called background/chord staff to produce what is attached.

Stems are not never required. It is true that if stems are present, their *behavior* (default direction etc) will be dependent on the voices of the notes), but there is nothing you should normally need to *do* with them, any more than there is when *not* using multiple voices. Stems take care of themselves most of the time, multiple voices or no. If there is something in particular you are trying to do, please explain in more detail. That is, are you trying to select one or more notes? Trying to change duration of a note? Move notes from one voice to another? Which notes specifically, and which instructions from the Handbook are you trying to follow?

The corruptions in your score will take a while to sort out, I'm afraid. In order to help you do that, we'd have to understand how it *should* go. Some notes are either too long or on the wrong beat or both, but it's impossible to know just by looking at the score which notes are good and which are not.

Marc, thanks for your thoughts and efforts. Meas 1-2 sb as shown:

I purschased this song/piece/score. Vendor sent me
TEF
pdf
and at my special request, an xml.

I am simply trying to work with xml to make my own minor changes and edits.

Am also confused cause he's got more than 8/8's in 1st measure.
Hell, I just want to delete the dot, I play it without that anyway.
And get xml to look like above.

But also, when I try to delete the dot, the 1/4 note nxt disappears.

I was hoping to get more than a few scores from this vendor. I really like his style of playing and song selection. But Ive been fighting this now for 4-5 hours instead of playing - uggh.

The more than 8 eighths int he first measure is indeed the problem I mentioned. Not sure what you mean about deleting the dot - even the picture you show from the original appears to show a rhythm issue. But yeah, it seems the files are not well constructed, and fixing them up to be correct would take quite a bit of work.

Marc - thanks to you and others for words on
* fixing up my TEF exported as xml, and
* comments on voices.

I still don't really understand the "voices" stuff, and I was never able to link a staff tio the existing TAB staff, was never able to edit the original TAB staff, but I did succeed.

1. I added a link TAB & std staff below existing TAB staff.
2. I went through original TAB meas-by-meas and where the voice2 note time slot was available in voice1, I simply switched voice of the note in the orig TAB.
3. I then copyNpasted into my new "system" (I like that word even if it is not MuseScore accurate.)
4. for the meas that had more than 8/8, I simply typed them in from scratch
5. I now have everything in one voice & I deleted the old/original TAB staff from TEF file.

I write the above explanation cause it might help someone else.

It's the same song, but its not TAB's out for guitar. In any case, you say "...this result with a TEF file..."

How did you do it? I have purschase a TEF file which is fine, but the free TEF viewer does not allow more than 16 meas of "export" or "save as". So I went back to vendor and requested he send me a full "export/save as" in xml format. He did, and that is what I am trying to work with. But it has 2 voices, whereas vendor's printed sheets do not, and free TEF viewer also does not. It put one voice as a background to play with. I want to get rid of that.
