Muted Instrument Features
There's a feature for muted trumpets, trombones, assorted brass, etc. That imitates the sound of a mute pretty well. But my issue with this feature is that you have to implement the mute at the beginning of the song, and it has to stay on for the entire song. In many compositions brass players have to put on multiple mutes, and take them off at certain points during the song. So, my suggestion is that the mute feature be added to the list of instruments and then they could be changed with the change instrument feature.

To be clear: in real life, any brass instrument can be muted. Heck, it's possible and occasionally useful to mute woodwinds as well, and of course there are any number of similar techniques for piano, guitar, and other instruments.
But none of these options are provided by default in MuseScore, because General MIDI only defines a muted trumpet sound, not a muted trombone etc. You can add the text but there will be no playback unless you find a specialty soundfont that includes an appropriate sample, and you will need to use the instrument change text to take advantage of this if you want the sound changed mid-score.

Perhaps the sounds could be added to the default sound font so we can use instrument change for it. There would be few issues using it this way.

It's certainly possible to do that, but the issue would be, it would only work when using the soundfont we provide. None of the standard GM-compatible soundfonts people might otherwise like to would work, and would probably produce no sound at all for these instruments or else a random unrelated sound. It's not a deal-breaker, but a concern worth taking into consideration.

no, your forgetting brass band instruments. you can mute the following brass instruments
trumpet
cornet
tenor horn
baritone horn
flugelhorn
euphonium
tuba (eb and bb)
trombone in bb
french horns are muted with the hand, i dont know if they can be muted by other means but theoretically they can i dont know if in practice they do though.

Indeed 5 years later this has changed, now most brass instruments can get muted, using the muted trumpet sound IIRC

Oh, wow I didn't know about that thank you. It doesn't seem to work on Trombones though.

Yes, the General MIDI standard does not include a muted trombone sound, so none of the usual soundfonts include one. Thus there would be nothing to change to. if you have found a specialty soundfont that does provide this sound and you wish to use it with MuseScore, see the Handbook under "Soundfonts" to learn how. Then you can use the "Instrument" element from the "Text" palette to change to a new sound at that point in the score.

So far as I know for a muted trombone (or another instrument beside the trumpet) you've to edit the instruments.xml file and to find a soundfont that have a muted trombone sound included.
