Separating voices
If I have more than one voice on a staff, is there a way to separate them, by that I mean to have each voice on its own separate staff. the explode function does not seem to do this. I am using MuseScore 2.

I figured it out by typing "filter selection" in the handbook page. Thank you very much.
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/tools#explode should do this though, if it doesn't this may be a bug, or a usage error

From the handbook under explode
"This feature is intended for use with chords, not multiple voices, which can be selectively cut and pasted from one staff to another using the Selection Filter."
You can only explode voice 1. You have to use the selection filter and manually move other voices to new staffs.

How to do it correctly.
Add new instrument using the instrument dialog (press the I button to find it).
Open the filter selector by pressing F6 if it's not open already
uncheck Voice 1
Cut the measures you want on a new line (olnly voice 2 will be cut)
Paste to new instrument line
select all the measures you just pasted
go to menu edit | voices | exchange voices 1-2
Reselect the same measures
press delete (all the extra rests will disappear)
recheck voice 1 in filter selector
press F6 to make it disappear again if you don't want it visible.
