If you are using a Chtromebook, then I assume you are running Linux via crouton? If so, you probably need to set up ALSA and/or some other other audio subsystem that is not set up by default by that script. I remember a utility called "cras" I needed to configure manually when I was using a Chromebook. Anyhow, ask for help in the Support forum and other users will probably be able to guide you further.
