For easier maintenance and translation and also because their size doesn't really warrant compression, the workspace files should not be compressed but plain xml files.
Workspace files are not compressed XML. They are containers containing a xml file. They can also contain SVG, images etc... so they are not compressed to occupy less space.

So how would we get them to be translatable? At least basic and advanced, the ones that are part of the package.
