"N" key abruptly gives up and can't input notes via MIDI

• Mar 23, 2014 - 14:42

Hello, I'm new here as I use the one in Japanese most of the time. I'm putting this here hoping I can get a quicker response. I found this software only a month ago and am still in the process of learning basics. Right now, I'm breaking myself into using a MIDI keyboard to put in notes. So far I've learned to move around with "N" off and on and the ten keys to set note values.

My immediate problem is that the N key abruptly gives up and and simultaneously the ten keys. When this happens, I can't use the MIDI keyboard at all and have to manually click on the Menu bar and and the notes of different values listed there.

I want to have the setting done right at start and go on putting notes without technical interruptions. How could I do this, please? I'm still a green Musescore user and a bit old (79) to catch up with too technical an advice. So, please be tender. Thanks.

My God, it was a fast feedback! I was right putting that message here in English. Yes, sir, the ten keys are how we call the numeric keypad in "Japanese". My version of Musescore is 1.3 and I use a Mac 10.9.2 and my keyboard a Korg microKey 25, a very primitive one!

This is my first try on this kind of software and my knowledge is so feeble. I compose for solo instruments as well as quartets, quintets, etc. and occasionally for orchestra. Right now, I'm commissioned to work out trios for Niko (Chinese two-string instrument), Mandolin and guitar. I have thus far handwritten all of my scores and that has been some headache over the years.

I'm aware of larger scoring software like Finale, Sibelius, etc. but afraid I would not be able to utilize what they offer. This software suits me fine if I can get used to its basics.

Thank you for your attention, and I really appreciate your guidance all up to some level of proficiency.

It's difficult to guess exactly what's happening in your case - for instance, the exact sequence of events which lead to your situation (so we might be able to reproduce it).

Having said that, here's a suggestion:
When the 'N' key abruptly gives up, try using the 'Esc' key on your computer, then click on a note or rest in the score to resume entering notes via MIDI.

Also, there are discussions in these forums regarding the relative benefits of 'MIDI' vs. 'Computer Keyboard' note entry. Basically:
If you use the ten keys (numeric keypad) for frequently entering different note durations, it's only one more action to key in a note's pitch (after its duration), as you're already on the computer keyboard.
On the other hand, if you need to enter the *exact* octave all the time, and the note durations rarely change, MIDI entry might have an advantage.

Regards.
