notes color error with sfz

• Oct 2, 2017 - 16:33

Hi!
I use specific scores with sfz soundfonts where one wav file is used for single note. I see that most of notes in my scores are in red ("extending beyond the normal range of an instrument").

Can anybode explain me why, for example for notes 9-12 (B-47, D-50, F-53, A-57)?

Here is fragment of sfz used:

lokey=19 hikey=91
loop_mode=loop_continuous
ampeg_release=10
. . . . .

sample=samples\2007_02_LH_07.wav
volume=10
lokey=47 hikey=47
pitch_keycenter=47

offset=1000
end=423052

sample=samples\2007_02_LH_08.wav
volume=10
lokey=50 hikey=50
pitch_keycenter=50

offset=1000
end=250718

sample=samples\2007_02_LH_09.wav
volume=10
lokey=53 hikey=53
pitch_keycenter=53

offset=1000
end=244564

sample=samples\2007_02_LH_10.wav
volume=10
lokey=57 hikey=57
pitch_keycenter=57

offset=1000
end=262134

Since you didn't attach your actual score I will speculate on the best guess. MuseScore does not look at the sound font to determine if a note is withing an instruments range. The problem is not with the sound font, but the instrument definitions. There are not instruments listed so I have not idea which ones are used. If you right click each staff and select staff properties you will see that the red notes are outside of the professional range of the instrument. BTW, vocal voices are considered instruments.

You didn't follow my instructions above. You pressed "I" rather than using the mouse to right click the staff and selecting "Staff Properties" which is the third choice down on the speed menu. As Jojo said, attaching the score, that is the best way to understand.

As far as every instrument in the instrument list saying staff 1 in treble clef, the definition for the instrument says the instrument is written in Treble clef and has only 1 staff which is called staff 1. If there were two staves, as with the piano, it would say Staff 1 - treble clef and Staff 2 - Bass clef.

Really strange indeed. May be related to using non-standard staff setup, like here 6 rather than 5 lines?
Also in Mixer I see 6 instruments, but there are only 5 staves and 5 instruments in the instruments dialog?

Ah! There is an Instrument change in top staff, measure 2, from tubular bells to tubular bells, this explains why there are 6 mixer entries and also why the range settings don't work: they are just overwritten by the tubular bells defaults again.

The staff lines didn't affect that. They bothered me, so that was something I fixed early on.

The text in measure 2 staff 1 is an instrument change to the same instrument. Removing the Instrument change does fix the problem. I suspect the staff properties are only being applied to the originally defined instrument but not the changed instrument. I don't know what could be done about this. There is currently no option to make modifications for the instruments.xml definition to an instrument that has been changed.

Interesting! I was unaware of possibility to change instrument from measure to measure.
But how to find such changes in score and remove them, can you advise, please?
Another question I have asked previously: Why in instruments definition for staves 1-5 ALL staves are "staff 1" with treble clef?

Well, you placed that instrument change there, so you should have known about it?
The fact that the mixer shows more instruments than there are staves, which none of the instruments having multiple sound settings (like violin which has 3, bowed/normal, pizzicato, tremolo and trumpet, which has 2, normal and muted) give an indication that there is some instrument change somewhere, so the next step is to check all texts, if you find one with style "Instrument Change" you have a good candidate.
I found it by looking at the mscx file with a plain text editor.

The instrument "Tubular Bells" by default gets notated in Treble clef, and by default has one staff.
Piano would have 2 staves, in trebles and ball clef
