New option under Select / More for notes (Stem direction)

• Nov 12, 2017 - 02:19

I have imported a midi file that has the note stems for the closed high-hat of a drum track going all which way. Manually correcting all the stems to point upward is a bear. (grrr owl!). Would it be possible to add another specifier under the Select / More option for notes so I can choose "Same staff, Same Voice, Same pitch, AND ... same stem direction? That way I can use the X option and all the stems for that note will then be in one direction.
Thanks.
Can't wait for 3.0! (But I guess I'm gonna have to wait.) :-(

You can select all of the notes with the current options (same voice and pitch) then use the inspector to set all of the stem directions or up or down rather than auto.

I tied to flip the closed high-hat stems this way but it doesn't work. Inspector even says the stem direction is up, but it still stays down. Only way to flip it is to manually use the X key. Here is the incomplete file. Do to the drum staff at measure 179. Select the cross notes with the stems pointing down, use the Select / More option to select the same staff, same voice, same pitch, and same notehead. Use Inspector to flip the stems up. The result is they stay down. Maybe this is a bug that needs to be fixed? The incomplete song is attached. Again, go to measures 175-180 and try to change the closed high-hat cross notes so the stems point up using inspector. It doesn't work for me, not even when I select one note and change the stem direction.

Just call me Mr. Obvious, but it's not supposed to work that way. Even limiting it to the notes you want to flip, the 1/8th notes, doesn't allow you to flip them. In the inspector they always report the stems on the 1/8th notes as being up, even if you individually flip them so they are up and then flip them again so they are down. This is an obvious bug and should be reported. You can select measure 173-176 and use the file menu and Save selection... so you can attach it to the bug report.

An additional note. I checked what happens when I try to flip the stems in the guitar also. When I selected one note, the stem would flip. When I selected two consecutive connected individual notes, they would not flip. When I selected the two chords as a selection, the stems flipped. I couldn't use the inspector to change stem directions at all on that either, so it seems this is not a drum problem but all beamed notes problem.

OK. I logged a bug under the drum section. When you chose the notes and they did not flip, does inspector say that they did? Inspector says the closed-high hat notes in my piece are flagged as pointing up, even though they are pointed down.

The problem here is that while you are forcing them stems up, the beams are still forced down. Not sure how they got that way, a normal score would have them on auto, as would a normal MIDI import. My guess is you inadvertently forced the beam down at some earlier stage in the process.

Probably we should consider automatically override the beam direction if the user explicitly sets the stems of all notes on that beam to up (or down). Still, it does work if you leave the beam direction at auto, and really, you have asked MuseScore to do two conflicting things, so it isn't too surprising it can't figure out how to respond (even though the answer does seem obvious enough in this particular case).

First things first - there is no reason the stems should be every which way for the same MIDI pitch. Something appears to be wrong with the MIDI file or with the import process. Can you attach it so we can look?
