Akai keyboard stops allowing input

• Mar 21, 2018 - 15:59

This is puzzling me immensely. I plug in my Akai LPK25 into USB. Launch MuseScore 2.1 and I have had no problem inputting pitches directly from the controller, but it suddenly stopped! If I press "N" and get into Note Input mode, nothing. Press "N" again to get OUT of input mode, I can play pitches!!! What??? Any suggestions? I've checked prefs and Enable MIDI Input is checked, as is Play Notes while editing.

You probably changed note input modes. Try to click the icon below the new score icon on the tool bars at the top left of the window. It should have a dot next to Step-time (default).

Mike, thanks for the feedback. I forgot to include that, yes, step-time (default) is on. But the weird thing is that when I go to real-time auto or manual the notes are detected from the Akai keyboard but they do not advance as they would in step-time.

Now, since I posted, I stumbled upon something EXTREMELY odd and confusing! I opened up a new sheet and it worked!! When I went back to the piece I created to start working on, it doesn't work! One does, one doesn't. How's THAT for crazy??

I am continuing to have the same problem (even now w/2.2.1) and it is driving me insane. Perhaps my problems happened when I upgraded MuseScore to a "newer version", but as of 9-months ago (I also posted this concern then), I simply cannot get my ONCE WORKING Akai LPK25 keyboard controller to place notes as I play them in STEP-TIME (default) mode!! I'm on a Mac using High Sierra 10.13.4.

Understand that Real-time works as it should (auto and manual). I just don't like to use Real-time modes.

So to recap and clarify what I've discovered in the "normal" (default of Step-time) using a new Untitled or existing score:

• WITHOUT note entry engaged, I can hear the keyboard and pitches through my speakers on my Mac.

• WITH note entry engaged (pressed "N" to start entry) the speakers are silent and NO NOTES appear on the staff. The "blue entry box" stands fast on beat one and NOTHING happens, regardless of the rhythm selected using the numeric entry.

I miss being able to enter notes on the keyboard controller in Step-time!!!

Thoughts???

A couple of things:

1) If you enter a note normally first (mouse or computer keyboard) then press a key on the keyboard, does it do anything? If it adds a note to form a chord, then the problem has to do with how the "note off" messages are being sent and received, and we can go from there.

2) Try restarting MuseScore, then immediately going to note input mode without first doing anything on your keyboard - that is known to cause problems. Does this help?

For #1, there may be a setting somewhere in your keyboard to control how it sends note off messages. But if #2 solves it, I wouldn't worry about it. You can thank someone else on the forum for having tracked down that bug. I forget who. But we should probably get it logged in the issue tracker so it can be fixed. Have you ever filed a bug report before? Try Help / Report a Bug, from within MuseScore. Then describe the problem and the solution that worked. We can take it from there.
