See #106241: Monitor resolution detected incorrectly, making sizes wrong for additional discussion. But bottom line is, if the system does not properly report the monitor resolution to us, then indeed we will size things incorrectly. Workaround would be to use the "-D" command line option with the true resolution, or in some cases, "-x 1" seems to fix it.
