Deleting parts of a score

• May 18, 2018 - 18:37

I have a score with four parts. I want to delete three of the parts so that I'm left with one part only. I've tried selecting two of the lines (parts) but when I delete them, the lines for each of the four parts are deleted. Is there a way to select only the individual parts for editing and/or deleting?
thanks!

It sounds like you have added staves to an instrument. Use the I key to bring up the Instruments dialog. Select staves and use the delete button. The staves are in the same order as you see them in the score.

Thanks for the quick response. I pressed "I" and deleted staffs 1, 2, and 4 (leaving the desired 3). Unfortunately, a lot of material was deleted. I'll try this again but so far this doesn't seem to be working. Any further thoughts?

Sounds like maybe you inadvertently added some content to different staves rather than putting it all on one staff? Hard to say without seeing the score. But if that's it, undo the delete, then copy and paste the music so it really is all on the same staff. If that's not it, then as I mention in my other response, please attach your score so we can do better than guess.

You have done some WEIRD things with this. The error message was that measure 43 is corrupt on staff 3. When I tried to fix it I realized that the half note F is move from staff 1!

Did you import this using MuseScore's import function? That seems to be the case from looking at the score properties, but I'm not 100% because the info is a little different than I remember.

The problem with doing what you want is that you have 3 staves on one instrument, which is quite unusual. Moreover, you have (for example) notes moved from staff 4 to staff 1 using cross staff notation. You are going to simply have to either

copy and paste the notes, probably almost one by one from where they are displayed to a new staff as Shoichi suggested

or

Reenter the part by hand using one of the note input modes available.

From an editing point of view, the score is such a nightmare, I would not attempt to make any individual parts from it.

edit: I cross posted with Shoichi, I would download the score he linked to for the above reasons.

@Shoichi, because of all the notes being moved from one staff to another, deleting a staff deletes notes on another staff. It can be done, but you'd need to reenter a bunch of notes that get deleted from it and delete notes leftover that were displayed on other staves.

Are you trying to say the score was imported from a version besides MuseScore's import? The source is a PDF file and I don't think @mdkyte entered than info in it.

It is really messed up because of all of the cross staff notation being used. Implode currently doesn't work with multiple voices. Select a couple of measures on all the staves and the notes will look like a rainbow from all the voices they are in. Click individual notes and you will see how far the notes have been moved from where they started. That's why I said I would start from scratch if I needed a part and not other way to get it. I think you rescued the OP by finding the other uploaded copy of the score. It seems most people who rely on an import from a PDF do so because they do not want to learn how to enter the notes into the score themselves. Fixing this would take a VERY long time if someone had to reenter the score from scratch.

It's not totally clear what you mean by "parts", but if you mean the same thing MuseScore means - the score generated using File / Parts containing just the staff for a single instrument - you can delete parts by going back to File / Parts, selecting a part, and deleting it. It sounds like maybe you mean something else, though. So in order to assist better it would help if you attached your score and describe what you are trying to do in more detail.

Are you sure you really want to delete those other parts? They are important to the music! Maybe you just want to temporarily focus on the third staff only, because you are trying to learn to play or sing that part? Anyhow, to truly delete the other staves, go to Edit / Instruments, select the other staves, and hit Remove. But if this for rehearsal purposes, you'd be better off redoing this score as four separate instruments with one staff each instead of one instrument with four staves. Create a new score set up that way, then copy and paste the content into it. Then you can use File / Parts to isolate the parts.

BTW, you might be using 2.2.1 now, but that score was created with 2.1. Do be sure you really have 2.2.1.
