virtual piano keyboard instrument sound when Note Entry mode is not 'on'
I am using MuseScore 2.2.1 rev 51b8386 on a Windows 10 laptop. I use the virtual piano keyboard frequently both for note entry and for 'playing ahead' to be sure of the notes I want to enter, before entering them. When I enter the notes - from the virtual piano keyboard - the sound that I hear corresponds to the instrument assigned to the stave I enter the note in. Which is good. However, when playing the virtual piano keyboard when Note Entry mode is not on, i.e., while 'playing ahead', the sound the virtual piano plays is a flute -- not a piano. This is ok, sort of, for treble notes, but bass notes are pretty well lost.
How can I change the sound that the virtual piano keyboard produces, when Note Entry mode is not on? I haven't found anything in any of the support forums, faqs, handbooks, etc..

I guess maybe you are working on an orchestra score? If you have nothing selected, MuseScore uses the top staff. But if you select a measure on another staff, MuseScore uses that sound. So, if you want a piano sound, just be sure to have a piano staff in the score, and click a measure there.

Thank you for this. I am indeed working on an orchestral score. I don't really want to add a piano part, just for the eyesight issue of seeing all the parts, but I can now at least get a useful sound by choosing which instrumental stave to 'play ahead' on. I don't know if this might be considered as a potential enhancement, to have a way to change the virtual piano sound default. Not everyone works with orchestral scores, so perhaps this would be a minor point in the user community as a whole. There are other enhancements more important -- can't wait for the smart curves in release 3.0. Thanks again, for this reply, and for MuseScore in general. Great work.
