musescore 2.3.2 crashes on opening synthesizer--sometimes

• Jul 20, 2018 - 01:53

i used to have trouble with musescore crashing when adding, deleting or changing the order of soundfonts in the synthesizer dialog while the score was playing. that was a minor issue. i just stopped doing that.

but now just opening the synthesizer with a score open (any of several different scores) can crash the whole program. that is major.

Did you revert to factory settings before or after installing to 2.3.2? Sounds like there is an issue with some settings.

I would suggest to revert to factory settings (Help > Revert to Factory Settings) then uninstall MuseScore, then fresh reinstall.

ok. i have tried that and here is the list of soundfonts it crashes with, whether only one is applied to the score or several. I am using Windows 8.1 64-bit and have 4Gb RAM.

soundfont list (even the regular musescore is problematic)

If you are seeing crashes with only the default MuseScore_General soundfont loaded, it's clearly not a soundfont prloblem. If the problem is only with certain scores, please attach such a score.
If it's reproducible with even a completely new empty score created from one of the supplied templates (eg, the Treble staff template), then something else is seriously wrong. Either your MuseScore installation has somehow become corrupt, or there is a conflict with some other program or device on your system. Check the Handbook under "Known incompatibilities" to see if anything seems to fit. Otherwise, try Help / Revert to Factory Settings if you haven't already. If that doesn't help, try a complete uninstall / reinstall.

it does crash with the musescore_general (and sometimes that's the worst one). sometimes it crashes after the program is opened, but with no score open, and then an hour later i will sit down to work, start a blank score, and try to open the synthesizer and then it crashes. i compose about one piece per day and it will crash on any of them so it is not a specific score issue. the 2.0 version did not have the issue except when i tried to open several soundfonts or tried to change them while the music was playing. it may be that my 4GB of RAM is loading up in a hurry as often the program will say Not Responding and I have to wait or if i click on the screen it will crash the program.

yup it is a pain in the back side. i wish i knew the cause so i wouldn't keep accidentally shutting it down. i do know that if i open the synthesizer panel in the first couple of minutes after opening musescore, it is much less likely to crash, which is leading me to think this is a RAM issue or maybe my free anti-virus.

I just experienced the same crash. I went into the mixer and adjusted some sounds because they needed to come from a specific sound font. I saved my file, then when I clicked Synthesizer in the menu MusceScore unceremoniously closed... No warning, it just closed.

I was having a lot of crashing - same sorts of work flow activity. Only time it crashes now is if I open up too large or too many files at one time... E.g. when your merging / updating a heap of pieces into a single arrangement.

The fluid synthesiser seems to be happiest when interfacing with jackrouter (sound rate 9600 buffer size of 1024).

If your comfortable installing programs and configuring them it might be worth a try.

jack is available for Linux Windows and Mac OS.
