Score didn't save, possibly found autosaved file but now won't open

• Jul 27, 2018 - 17:42

Hello,

The last few weeks I've been working on a score. Probably put in 8-10 hours in the last week. I hit Ctrl+S probably every minute. A couple days ago I saved what I had, closed MuseScore, and then a few minutes later did a hard reboot on my computer for an unrelated issue (held power button down on computer, started it back up a couple minutes later). I used the computer that night and the next day without issue (did not open MuseScore). Today I opened the MuseScore file I had been working on, and it had only saved my work on the file through a couple weeks ago (none of work in the last week was saved). I do recall that there was a second tab open in the file that had a slightly different name than the original file, but I'm pretty sure I had closed and opened the score without issue, so I don't really think that's an issue, but I don't know.

I've done a little research based on the forum, and came across a file that has the right save time/date, but I can't open it. I uploaded a screenshot of the error message that pops up on MuseScore when I open the file, as well as a screenshot of the file location/description.

If anybody can help me open this file, I would really appreciate it - I don't know if I have the patience to re-arrange this.

Thank you!

It seems from your description and picutres that either your computer or MuseScore must have crashed at some point in the past, and the next time you started MuseScore, it offered to restore your last session, you said yes, but then you didn't do a "save as" to specify where the recovered file should go. So it went into the weird limbo place that such scores often go depending on which version of MsueScore you are using, what OS you are on, and how you started MuseScore in the first place (eg, double-clicking a score in your favorite file browser versus using a desktop icon). So all your subsequent work on the file probably got saved there, and that's the version you need. The oddly named one you show in the pictures is probably it indeed. You can try uploading it here and maybe someone can try to repair it, but I think it's possible it has been corrupted beyond repair. It's possible the hard reboot prevented the disk cache from flushing, but if so you'd have had a problem right away. Even so, there should be a backup of the oddly-named file in the same folde r- turn on display of hidden files to find it (will start with period, end with comma).

That's the only file in the folder where I found it (hidden or not). When I search "This PC" for ".mscz" that is the only file that shows up in the correct date range. Is there somewhere else I could search for files starting with
SC? Or maybe a better question is whether the file starting with SC would end with ".mscz"
