How do I create triplets and other tuplets across measures?

I am transcribing a solo that, from the fourth upbeat of one measure to the second beat of the next measure, fits seven notes. The only way to make a note value that exceeds the given measures' capacity is to tie it to another note in the next measure, but you can't make tuplets from tied notes for the net value of said notes, only the individual values of each note. I must keep all measures at four beats per measure. Thank you in advance.

In principle you can often do what you want using ties (tying a tuplet member before the barline to one after), but the result won't be very readable. Better to just notate what you really want. Luckily, it's possible, if a bit awkward. Select the two measures, use Edit / Measure / Join Selected Measures, create the tuplet, then add a barline from the palette where you want it to appear.
