Formatting Instrumental Parts

• Oct 15, 2018 - 22:39

Hi!

This is my first time posting. I am admittedly a newbie. I hope I've selected the right forum.

I dislike Finale. I find both Sibelius and Musescore to be much easier. When using Sibelius, I had learned (at my old school) to create parts from a band score and then to format them the same.

In Musescore, I have learned how to manupulate the layout of the score to my liking (in regard to system breaks), and how to formate ONE part (say, F horn) to my liking (example: measures 1-2 are one system, measures 3-5 are one system, etc).

Is there a way, once formatting one part, that I can tell Musecore to format the layout of ALL the other parts at the same time? Ideally, each instrument would them be looking at an identical format, while their pitches and rhythms differ as entered in the score.

Does that make sense?

Thanks,

Bruce

You question makes sense, but it often does not make sense to put 2 measures on the first system then 3 measures on the second system for every instrument in a large number for musical scores. In Symphonic works, when you have the bassoons playing whole notes and the flutes playing 16th notes, the same number of measures on a system do not make sense. So this part cannot be passed from one part to another. If you have a simple score, like for beginners, then a set number of measures might be appropriate, but this is an exception.

What can be passed from one part to another is things like font size for text. This is not the only thing, there are actually a lot of things that when you change it in a part, it can be applied to all parts, or only one part if you like. This includes most things from the Style and the Layout menus.

You still have to set the systems in each part. If you want 2 measures on the first system and 3 on all following systems, then you can use Edit->Tools->Add/Remove system breaks on each part by entering the first system break, then selecting the rest of the part before using it. This might make things go a little faster, but this is as fast as I can get it.

Indeed, that's the one situation where it could be useful = in most "real world" situations it would not be. I could imagine this being implemented as a plugin, but I am not aware of one existing. But actually, in most of the educational settings where you might want to force consistent line breaks from part to part, you might also want to force consistent line breaks from system to system, so you may at least be able to take advantage of Edit / Tools / Add/Remove Line Breaks rather than needing to add them individually.
