Best way for instrument change

• Nov 4, 2018 - 18:32

In this piece the trumpet is going back and forth between mute and open. In the mixer there are now several trumpet slots, both open and muted. Whenever I switch, a new slot for trumpet is added. I've always done it this way w/o a problem. I question if the redundancy is necessary.
So... is there way to do this with just ONE trumpet slot constant with the sound entry switched back and forth?

Trumpets come with two mixer channels, one for open and one for muted. The way to change between the tow is using staff text. After you enter the text, like "Mutes on," right click the text and select Staff Text Properties... You will get a dialog box that allows you to assign mute or open to each of the voices. In the case of a solo trumpet (or section playing unison) you need only change voice 1. Do this each time you switch between Mute and Open.

I have actually made a custom text in a custom palette I call "Text commands" where I have put Con Sordino and Senza Sordino with the appropriate channel assigned to voice 1 so I don't even need to go into staff text properties most of the time. I also did this for strings for pizzicato and arco, except I assigned voices 1 and 2 so these will apply to a normal divisi situation. One thing to note if you use my method. To hear these changes, you must look at the staff text properties of any staff text in the score and click OK or press enter, other wise the channel changes do not take effect.
