"One minor thing that would make a huge difference is magnetic stave movement (so you can far more easily drag staves apart), since dynamics and articulations get very easily lost in a large score."

Comments

Note - it should already be the case that staves automatically respace to avoid outright collisions. If you want even more space, you can use a spacer from the Breaks & Spacers palette. And probably if you want more space for one, you want it for all, so more to the point, I think, would be to give user control of the "minVerticalDistance" style setting.

But FWIW, we used to support Shift+drag as a way to add "extra distance above staff" - a shortcut to setting that staff property, so it applied to that staff score-wide, not just for this system. I think adding that back is more important than allowing a different way to add a spacer, which is what this suggestion amounts to.

In this context I also would like to see back the possibility of dragging a staff via "shift" and mouse. It doesn't mean, that I'm using it myself, but it would be for me a consistent behavior of moving elements inside a score, such as the possibility of moving text elements via mouse.
