deleting the blank bars at the end of a piece
To delete the spare bars at the end I selected the offending bars and pressed Edit/delete. Nothing happened. What should I have done?

Delete never removed measures but just emptied them, Ctrl+Del does remove them as does the new tool on 3.0, remove empty trailing measures

And there is an ongoing discussion to rename the corresponding menus, Delete measure to Empty measure , Timewise delete to Remove selected beats or some such
The confusingly-named "Timewise Delete" feature on the Tools menu will do this (I think that's the "tool" jojo mentioned). It's essentially Measures!Delete, but with some (less often needed) intra-measure deletion capabilities as I understand it.

No, the tool is Remove empty trailing measures, here much more appropriate. Last entry under the Tools menu
