Dynamics on single line percussion staff

• Mar 3, 2019 - 19:02

It seems, dynamics on singe line percussions staves refuse to get a reasonable distance from the staff so there's enough room between the percussion and the next staff to drive a Mac truck through. Am I missing something or is this a bug that really needs to be fixed.

Here's what it looks like

Here's better, but requires turning off auto placement and manually adjusting dynamics.

The biggest problem is that the dynamic is closer to the next staff than the staff it's attached to.

One of the big advantages of 3.0 is the "below" placement for dynamics allows the distance to be measured from the bottom staff line rather than the top, so the distance from staff to dynamics can be the same regardless of number of staff lines.

Not sure how you managed to create the image above, for me it works as expected:

Did you change the default dynamics position perhaps? Or maybe that's in 2.3.2 which does indeed have that problem since the position is measure relative to the top, not bottom line, and the style is set to work for five-line staves?

If that didn't clear it up, can you attach the actual score so we can investigate?

I started two scores today. Both with identical settings, both in 3.0.4, both using the symphony orchestra template. The difference is one score has notes notes in 29 measures, one has only some drum notes. Both are also set to 300% zoom. Both only have notes in the first few measures of their systems and only note in the snare drum. Here is a side by side comparison.

OK, this is really weird, but the spacing of the dynamic added to the first bar of the snare drum part is being affected by, of all things, the tremolo markings on the note on the cello and bass staves! I kid you not, delete them both and the spacing on the snare drum staff fixes itself.

This is obviously a bug, one of the stranger ones I can recall seeing. Once I realized (through trial and error, basically) this was what was happening, I used a development build to turn on "Debug / Show Skylines", and I see little spikes below each measure of the three drum staves, in measures where there are tremolo markings on other staves. Other measures don't have it - so you can add dynamics to measure 8 (for example) just fine.

A little further investigation shows the bug is that tremolo markings add themselves to the skylines of every staff, not just their own. But the effect is only generally noticeable on one-line staves because the tremolo will always be outside the staff whereas its normally on the staff.

It's probably a one-line fix in the skyline calculation for tremolo.

Because everything is measured from the top staff line internally, the effect is proportional to how far from the top staff line the tremolo is. Tremolo below notes triggers a bigger "spike" in the skyline because they are further below the top staff line than tremolo above notes.

Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure I have the fix figured out.
