MuseScore

M-audio midi keyboard plugged in and turned on before MuseScore is started. In notation mode ready to enter notes and midi keyboard is not connected; provides no notes.

Checked preferences. The midi keyboard is recognized as Midi Input. API is MME. Device is Speakers. Midi output is MMSystem Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth.
