Changeing instrumment name in one system

• May 1, 2019 - 19:57

As far as I know, you can't edit the name of the instrument only for one system. If you change the name, it changes it for every system. I'm currently writing a piece for string orchestra and I would be really nice to have a divisi as a seperate line and I can do that. I just make the 2.div invisible everywhere else. But, there is a problem: when there should be for ex. all Cellos palying, not only 1st or 2nd divisi, I can only leave the 1st or 2nd divisi showing there. So only 1st or only 2nd divisi plays. I hope you understand my problem.

Possible workaround: add 3 instruments; 1 for 1st divisi, another one for 2nd divisi and the last instrument for all. Leave empty where required and use "hide empty staves" style option.

Right now jeetee's suggestion seems to be the standard workaround for divisis, but it won't work if none of the instruments play during the first system, because "hide empty staves" can only be applied to the whole ensemble and not to individual instruments/staves. i.e. If they are all tacet, you can show all or none of them, but you cannot show one empty staff while hiding the other two. Considering how extensively this type of thing happens in orchestral string sections, this seems like it ought to be a high-priority issue.

Changing the name of an instrument in one system is comparatively easy and well-supported:
