Change instrument from alto to cowbell and back to alto?

• May 4, 2019 - 00:15

I have a hand written piece I'm working on where the alto sax player has an alto part and then a cowbell part and then back to the alto part. It's all on one line. Is it possible to do this in MS3? Right now I have two separate staves (1 alto and 1 percussion) and combine them into a 2-stave alto part via the "File|Parts" command. Is this the best way to do this? It makes the alto part unnecessarily complicated having two staves and would be nice to have just one. Not sure how this affects playback... and maybe that's the problem?

Any help is appreciated.

Unfortunately, you didn't say which version of Musescore you are using.

Just in case, please, see the attached files.

The standard format (Sax-Cowbell-Sax.mscz) is to use with Musescore 3.1.0. The other (Sax-Cowbell-Sax.mxl) is to use with other versions.

Whatever... You have to use the "Text" palette (Advanced workspace), and the option "Change Instrument".

I think it is related with the soundfont file we use.

In my installation, I use "GeneralUser GS 1.471.sf2" soundfont, from: https://www.dropbox.com/s/4x27l49kxcwamp5/GeneralUser_GS_1.471.zip?dl=1

With that soundfont, the G#4 is a cowbell sound.

Also, you have to select the aproppiate percussion bank of the soundfont (I used the bank "Standard 2").

Whatever, after the "Change Instrument" point, you can move the notes up or down, finding the sound you want to hear.
