1) Select a pitch or pitches that I want to respell enharmonically.
2) Choose (T)ools--->Respell pitches
3) The selected pitches are not altered, but other pitches in previous measures are.

You are using the wrong tool. You need to press J to cycle through the spellings of the selected notes.

Aha! That's very helpful, thank you Mike! I didn't see where this function appears in the top menu—is it only keystroke function? My problem is solved :)
