Plug in head phones and turn them on
start MuseScore
Otherwise MuseScore doesn't recognize the headphones.
If you have a second output device and the headphones still don't work open Edit->Preferences and in the I/O tab make sure your headphones are selected.
Replace "proper procedure" with "usable workaround for this already-logged known bug." In the I/O tab, press "Reset MIDI and Audio settings". Hopefully, one day someone will figure out how to fix this. Other apps don't need this advice to recognize plugging and unplugging headphones.
