Playback

The problem first manifested itself when I first upgraded to Musescore 3 from 2. I have taken every upgrade since in the hope of it being fixed but it's become worse. Musescore 2 is still absolutely fine, by the way.
Everytime I start Musescore 3 playback of the score does not work. Pressing Play does nothing. In fact even selecting a note produces no sound. To get things working I have to go to Edit|Preferences and Restart Audio and Midi devices.
Even so, sometimes the sound playback is then highly jittery (might not be the correct term, sounds like a Dalek) so sometimes I have to choose a different driver in preferences. It doesn't appear to matter which one I choose just choosing a different one can fix the problem.
I am running Windows 10 Pro 1903
May machine is a Dell Vostro 15-3568 with 8Gb Ram. It uses a Realtek Audio sound card. It's using the Waves MaxxAudio Pro DSP software
