Computer crashed, now file "cannot be opened"

• Mar 11, 2020 - 23:06

I've been trying to figure this out for a couple hours and just can't get my file back. My computer bluescreened while I was working and now MuseScore can't open my file. I've tried the backups and they aren't anywhere near the progress I'd made. I've tried the autosaves - same issue.

Unfortunately, there's nothing in that file. It's just a zip header and then nothing.

Your best bet is to use whatever latest version you can find from your autosaves and/or backup (hidden .mscz, file).

The autosave occurs every two minutes, but I believe that when I recovered and opened the backup, the autosave was unfortunately lost as it moved to the backup that I restored. Obviously this is an error on my part and much of this could have been avoided had I understood that the autosave should have been my go to, but since all the files were hidden, and the aforementioned help page lists backups first, I accessed the backup first.

OK, let's see.
You were working on a score. You had a Blue Screen Of Death. You recovered. You opened MuseScore. Did it offer to restore the previous session? Then what?
You should have either been able to open the last saved version, or the auto saved version. There should have been those three options.
What is of more concern to me is the BSOD to begin with. This should almost never happen.

Yes, this is the issue. I don't think MuseScore caused the BSOD, my computer is generally not very good and is getting decently old. But after the BSOD occurred, MuseScore did not offer to restore the session and when I attempted to open my file it "cannot be read". After some research, where I found the help page linked above, I unhid my backup files and was able to restore the last backup (not the autosave, which occurs every two minutes) this backup didn't have nearly as much progress as I'd made because it came from the session before the crash session. I accessed the backup first as it is the first option listed on the help page, and after I restored it, the autosave moved to that version of the file, so no accessing the old autosave. It's not a huge deal, I was able to regain most of my lost ground last night after posting this.
