I am working along in MS with the working keyboard shortcuts. Everything is fine until I open the palette and click something to the score (it can be a pedal or a slur, doesn't matter). Suddenly the keyboard shortcuts stop working. They won't work again until I open the palette again and type something into the search bar.
It's a minor but annoying problem.

Hmm...Usually, it is #300830: MuseScore 3.4.2 on macOS 10.15 (Catalina) "can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software". Yours is unable to use the palette shortcuts.
Are you applying the palette element using the keyboard? If so, focus remains on the palette, you need to press Esc to return to the score. If that's not what you mean, please attach a sample score and give precise step by step instructions we can follow in order to understand and assist better.
