Transfer user config from Musescore 2 to Musescore 3

• Apr 21, 2020 - 13:58

Hi,
I've searched the forums and the web and could not find an answer to my issue - I have used Musescore 2 Portable for years and had it all set up exactly to my liking - keyboard shortcuts, preferences, styles, plugins, soundfonts, etc. Now I'd like to start using Musescore 3, but it seems I'd need to set it all up from scratch again! :-O I thought an upgrade installation would pick up and transfer all my settings, but unfortunately that did not happen.
Does anyone know if there is an (easy) way to transfer all the config options from 2 to 3 without going through the hassle?
Thanks!

Plugins generally aren't compatible, so that's out. For soundfonts, you can just copy the folder over, or point MuseScore 3 at your existing folder using Edit / Preferences / General.

While there are indeed too many changes to shortcuts and preferences to transfer them reliably, you can have some success with styles. It's still a bit iffy because really MuseScore 3 relies on having its own defaults for many things to work at its best, especially with regard to automatic placement. But, you can try taking a score that was set the way you like in MuseScore 2, opening it in MsueScore 3, and then using Save Style to create a new MSS file. Again, though, I don't really recommend it, you're likely to end up with a mess of incompatible style settings that will produce non-optimal results. Could be worth a try though I guess.
