Lyrics: melismas under rests

• May 9, 2020 - 15:51

If possible, how can I extend the melisma from the last syllable of a word under a series of notes, when that series includes rests? (Either as a continuous, or a discontinous line.)

It indeed doesn't for me on 3.4.2.

Then again I wonder what the use of such an indication would be? Please keep singing this text, but do it in silence (because rests..) ?!

Perhaps the OP can better explain their intended goal and why they'd need to put a melisma under a rest in the first place?

OP here. Although I'm composing new music in a (fairly) modern idiom, I'm influenced by Renaissance and Medieval music, and model my works on it. In that style, a text syllable is often extended over many notes, sometimes with rests interpolated. In MuseScore, this works fine with middle syllables separated by hyphens, but not final ones.

I'm attaching the score I'm working on, cf. mm12-14. In m13, Bass, I could enter "(-us)_____", this would work as well, but not as elegantly. Shoichi, your workaround sounds good, as long as I could match the look with all the other Lyrics text.

In general, it was MuseScore's ability to handle Early Music features which attracted me to it in the first place--I've used it for compositions with figured bass and in lute tablature--and I'm continually impressed how much flexibilty, subtlety, and elegance I can achieve if I put some effort into it.

I think it's safe to say that melisma's on rests are entirely broken.
As putting normal lyrics (text) there does work, but if you add a melisma to that same text it floats somewhere at the top of it.

Please file this into the issue tracker.

I fear indeed that you'd have to resort to workarounds like the staff text or a regular line until that bug is fixed.
