Playback buttons grayed out, no sound when inputting notes
I'm using a Macbook pro Catalina version 10.15.4 and Musescore 3.4.2.25137. It appears all buttons related to playback such as play and rewind are greyed out and unselectable. View>Synthesizer is greyed out and unclickable. I/O Preferences show blank spaces for API, MIDI Input, and Device, and there is no dropdown list for them.
Interestingly enough, this problem isn't unique to musescore and happens with Sibelius as well, where no sound comes out when I press play and an "audio engine error bad settings" error comes up every time I open it. So it's probably a problem with my mac. Anyone with experience with this can help?

I don't know enough about Macs, but try searching for "PRAM" and resetting it

Exactly the same problem with me (in musescore and sibelius), i have a Macbook pro Big Sur version 11.6 and musescore 3.6.
I think it has to do with the new updates.

It has more do with specific OS settings, audio hardware, and conflicts with other software, Please see the posts above with links to the FAW article on the things to try, and if after trying each and every one of the suggestions, if none of the rest work, please follow #8 carefully
