Autofill and moonlight sonata

• May 13, 2020 - 06:19

I have a school project and the software (2.3.2 Windows 10 but really stored on a physical hard disk). I want to arrange Moonlight sonata for both jazz and rock. For some reason Musescore seemed to autofill what part of movement one I didn't input myself (which is exactly what I don't need).

Consider using the current software version (3.4.2) instead for new work. It can be installed and live side-by-side with 2.3.2. The only thing to be aware of is that once you save a score with 3.x, a 2.x version won't be able to read it.

MuseScore has no automagic fill function. The only thing I can come up with that has you startled is that MuseScore ensures the duration of notes and rests of voice 1 always match up with the measure duration. Meaning that you start out with a measure of silence (shown as a full measure rest) and once you start putting in sound (notes), MuseScore updates the notation of the remain silence to show how much of it is still left in the measure.
Simply continue to put in your music and it'll overwrite the remaining silence.

Can you tell me ALL (or as many as possible) explanations as to how the score might've been updated? Ignore the one already given, since yours wouldn't allow the remaining notes to be added. Maybe by "MuseScore has no automagic fill function." you mean there is such a function, but it's due to a bug? Regardless, the fact that I only intended to use part of the piece for my project and found that I had instead a record of the entire piece doesn't bother me, as I know how to make that record contain only what I want. I simply want to know why I got extra measures, (not serious enough of a bug to force me to change versions.)

It's not clear what you mean. Are you talking about rests that are present in measures you haven't entered? Or just the fact that there measures you haven't entered in the first place? When you createD the score, you told MuseScore how many measures you want, it just does what you ask. If you mean something else, we would need you to attach your score and describe the problem you are perceiving in more detail.

I mean exactly what I wrote: "MuseScore has no automagic fill function" None
It certainly doesn't start composing things out of thin air that then happen to be the correct continuation of a score you started.

So the better question likely is, where does your score come from? As you say you haven't written it yourself; have you perhaps started from a downloaded score?

My score comes from transcribing some edition from IMSLP, plus adding my own parts (any instrument other than piano). I only entered x measures sometime just after Easter, but got y measures on the same day I created this thread where y>x by a huge margin (enough to increase the length of the score 4.5-fold or from 1:15 to 5:40). I think I could only upload the shorter version of the score (which is only approximate for other reasons), but the one with extra bars from memory seems to have the piano part play that piece without obvious wrong notes.
