Import MIDI to Specific Key Sig

• Jun 12, 2020 - 01:29

I have paid a lot of money for music notation software over the years, finally gave MuseScore a try today and was blown away to see the most beautiful, most accurate chart I have ever seen from a midi import.

One issue: when I import, the chart is being set to Eb Major and not E. (Perhaps the algorithm found less accidentals setting the key to Eb, but you definitely don't want all those root notes on the 1 having naturals stuck on them.)

I can change the key after the import, but this causes more awkward accidentals.

How do I import the midi into a specific key?

If the key is set in the file, it should import correctly. So that's the easy solution in most cases. If you can't fix the MIDI file, then you can try Ctrl+A to select all, then either Tools / Respell Pitches, or the Down cursor key followed by Up (this will have the effect of respelling everything using sharps), or some combination of these. Possible other tricks involving Tools / Transpose using some crazy interval like diminished second.

If you post the actual score, we can advise better.

Thanks for the reply. You nailed it, Marc. I'm working from a DAW, so I had all the notes programmed perfectly, but I didn't think to check the key setting.

That's a good tip on the Respell Pitches feature. I ended up fixing it all manually, but if there's ever a next time, good to know it's there!
