place notes
click notes as normal to start playback
playback stays gray and does not allow you to click it

The sound of the notes when placed also stays silent. the Whole top row (anything to do with playback) is grayed out

Has also happened to me after updating to 3.5. Playback buttons as well as Mixer and Synthesizer are both greyed out. I have tried all the options from https://musescore.org/en/node/96811: reverting to factory settings, reinstalling Musescore, updating audio drivers.

When I go to Preferences --> I/O, all the drop down menus are blank with no selectable options, restarting audio and MIDI Devices does nothing.

I'm on windows 10, this issue only started when I updated from Musescore 3.4 to 3.5

I'm curious if you had a windows update at the same time the problem started? I had one on or about the date I upgraded MuseScore. This will sometimes require you to upgrade your midi device driver to make it continue to work.
