Musescore for Mac uninstalled itself

• Aug 26, 2020 - 22:11

I installed Musescore on my Mac (its upgraded and I downloaded the newest version of Musescore) but when I restarted my Mac for another thing the app is now gone and I have to redownload the file from Musescore.com. Is this a common issue or did I do something wrong?
Thanks!

I don't remember hearing of this and I've been watching these forums about 4 years. It sounds like you did something wrong though I can't imagine what. Perhaps a Mac user could help. Which operating system do you have, in case it helps the person who might be able to help you.

I have the macOS Catalina version 10.15.5. I feel like I've definitely done something wrong maybe in the installing or something but I can't figure out what. I think maybe I figured it out but I'm not sure. So I dragged the file that is listed as application out of the folder where it installs and now I have four files and I'm very confused. This is my first Mac so I'm still trying to understand the system.

Now worries, it will all be right!
1. Delete the four files you selected in the screenshot you attached ("move to trash" or press command + backspace);
2. Enter your password if you are asked to do so;
3. Download a fresh copy of the dmg file from https://musescore.org/;
4. Open the dmg file; it should contain two items: on the left an alias to your Applications folder, on the right the MuseScore application;
5. Drag the MuseScore application onto the Applications folder.

And you're done! You should see MuseScore in your Applications folder and you can open it. You don't need the dmg file any more, so you can delete it to save disk space.

On macOS there are basically two ways of installing apps:
- Downloading a dmg (=disk image) with just the app in it, so you can drag it to your applications folder (like MuseScore)
- Downloading a dmg containing a .pkg file (=installation package, like .msi files on Windows I think?). When you open such a pkg, you can just follow the onscreen instructions, and once the installation has completed you can find the app in your applications folder.

Oh, and the file type of an application is .app in macOS (like .exe in Windows).
