This was fixed in #305069: Chord symbols attached to fret diagrams don't play back. But there still seems to be a residual problem.
- Create a blank treble staff score.
- Add a fretboard diagram to the first measure rest, say.
- Press Play.
Result: No sound. - Add a chord symbol to the next measure, then press Play.
Result The chord/fretboard symbol plays back OK.
Alternatively, after step 3, save and reload the score. The chord/fretboard symbol now plays back OK.
Comments
Indeed, it appears the mere act of adding a fretboard diagram does not trigger generation of the chord symbol playback info. Once you add another chord symbol, they then all play.

Workaround: "Once you add another chord symbol, they then all play." (and then make it invisible if need be)
