Steps:

  1. Click on a note and try to add expression text.

  2. Right click the text and select Style.

  3. Try to modify the parameters.

Result: MuseScore totally ignores the config params. The only way to edit the placement is by using the Inspector.

The style that comes of for Expression Text is Format > Style > Staff Text. This indeed seems wrong at first glance, but Expression text is kind of Staff Text, but, that's not the place to change the text style (Font, size etc) of Staff text either, there's a difference between the Style of Staff (or Expression) text (like position) and the Text style of Staff (or Expression) text. For the latter you need to go to Format > Style > Text style > Expression text, or the Inspector and it's 'Set to style' button.
