in 4/4, notes the length of a breve will display in only one bar leaving the second bar with a fontless note instead of tying two semibreves

Actually I guess this is by design and you have enabled Format > Style > Score > Display note values across measure boundaries (EXPERIMENTAL, early music only) It is the same for (at least) 3.5 too
