Cannot enter drumset notes via clicking in staff

1) Create a drumset part

2) try to click in the notes on the staff rather than using the keyboard.

This has a side effect that I cannot manually make a 2nd voice for the drumset part, which I want to do to create a 16th note hihat stream on top of the stuff down below. When I try to use different rhythmic values on a chord, it doesn't work either, because it auto-matches the note value of the initial note.

Misc notes:
Version is brand new, as I just installed this program.
Issue is not mirrored in other instruments.

Below is a list of things I checked to try to fix this, before writing this issue page.
being in advanced mode
looking throughout the entire inspector area
examining part/staff properties (yes, clicking the correct measure)
examining "format" dropdown at top of window
examining percussion in the instruments window
checking "edit drumset"

The only workaround I found in all of the above things is to split the staff, but that is nonsensical, to expect to reasonably bring to a drummer.
